Living with serious mental illness in Niagara can sometimes feel like being caught in a fast moving river. The system is loud, overwhelming, and hard to keep your head above.

When you are discharged from the hospital or aging out of early intervention, it is easy to feel like you are pulled under by the undertow. When the system feels fragmented and underfunded, it is easy to feel abandoned.

The service is provided by a Social Service Worker as an independent project. You do not need a referral to reach out. You just text (289) 931-9722 when you do not know where to turn, and you will receive help finding solid ground. That's it, you don't even have to know how to start the conversation. Just ask Alex, are you there? No pressure. I'll be there.

What I can help with:
What I can help with:
System Navigation: Figuring out how to access CMHA, the Early Psychosis Intervention program, housing supports, or ODSP.
Psychoeducation: Understanding what is happening in the brain, how the nervous system works, and what recovery can look like.
Warm Hand-offs: Connecting you directly to the right clinical services when you are ready for therapy or medical care.

Sometimes making a phone call feels like too much. Reaching out for help shouldn’t feel like a burden.

Texting gives you space and anonymity. It is quiet and lets you reach out from wherever you are without the pressure of a traditional therapy appointment. You don't feel judged while someone is looking at you. You don't tell Alex who you are. Just what's going on and if wanted, guidance. It is a shock absorber for the system, catching people in the waitlist void and reducing caregiver burnout.
As the project grows, the Alex service will evolve into an encrypted chat directly on the website with texting still available. This will save cost on infrastructure and makes things more convenient if you choose to use this method.
GMLabs is also looking into creating a virtual voice assistant version of Alex for those wanting or needing a more natural way of communicating without the need to text while retaining the same anonymous, easy to access philosophy.
